STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill./) scored his first career goal as the No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (0-1-1) and No. 6 St. Norbert (1-0-1) skated to a 1-1 tie in UWSP's home opener.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard and UWSP goaltender Alex Proctor had 10 first-period saves in his collegiate debut.
At 5:42 of the second period, the Green Knights took a 1-0 lead. Proctor had six more saves in the second period to keep UWSP within a goal.
Heneghan got the Pointers on the board at 12:12 of the third period, the first goal of his UWSP career.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) had an assist on the play.
The game went to overtime and UWSP got a power play 1:45 into the extra stanza. SNC goaltender Johnny Roberts stood on his head in overtime making 10 of his 44 saves as the game ended in a tie.
The teams played a shootout afterward and
Noah Finstrom (New Baltimore, Mich./) converted in the fifth round, the only goal of the shootout.
The Pointers remain at home for two non-conference games next weekend. UWSP hosts Gustavus Adolphus on Friday (Nov. 4) and St. Scholastica on Saturday (Nov. 5) for 7:00 p.m. games both nights.
