Kopp, Michalske Double-Doubles Lead Pointers Past UWL in Conference Finale

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) recorded her 21st double-double of the year to lead the No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (22-6, 4-3) past UW-La Crosse (11-17, 1-6) in four sets.

Kopp led all players with 21 kills, her ninth match this season with at least 20 kills. She added 11 digs for the double-double and served up three aces.

Grace MIchalske also had a double-double with 44 assists and 13 digs. Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) had a team-high 14 digs and Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) was also in double figures with 12 digs.

Kopp and Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) combined for five kills as UWSP jumped ahead 7-4 in the first. Megan Schroder (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) had two kills as the Pointers tried to erase a 14-10 deficit. Then trailing 23-20 late, UWSP reeled off five-straight capped by a block and a kill by Kopp to take the set, 25-23.

Kopp and Paukner again put UWSP in front early in the second set. After falling behind, an 11-2 run by UWSP, punctuated by back-to-back aces from Kopp gave the Pointers a 19-14 lead. Peterson had an ace and Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) ended the 25-17 set two win with an ace.

Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had three kills midway through the third set as UWSP stayed close throughout. But a 7-1 UWL run ended the set and a 25-18 win for the Eagles.

Kopp had five kills, but couldn't shake the Eagles in the fourth. Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) had three kills late as UWSP regained the lead. A Kopp kill gave UWSP match point, but the Eagles got within one before Kopp finished off the match for a 25-23 set four victory.

The Pointers close out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 29) with a 12:00 p.m. match against Wartburg in La Crosse.
