WHITEWATER, Wis. – Senior
Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) recorded her third career double-double as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (9-7, 2-5) took No. 9 UW-Whitewater (17-2, 8-1) to double overtime before falling by a 74-69 final.
Greenheck grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds while pouring in 15 points all while playing a career-high 49 minutes. She added two steals, an assist and a block.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) led the Pointers with 19 points, 15 of which powered UWSP to seven point halftime lead.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) were also in double figures with 16 and 11, respectively.
Thomson, Pfeifer, Greenheck and Krueger each scored to put UWSP ahead 8-4 early.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) scored to halt an 8-0 run by UWW and the teams were knotted at 12-12 after one.
Greenheck buried a three to open the second quarter. Three-pointers by Krueger and Thomson pushed UWSP's lead to nine at 25-16. Another 8-0 run by UWW was answered by seven-straight and the final 10 of the half by Krueger as the Pointers led 35-27 at the break.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) hit a jumper to open the third and following consecutive makes by Greenheck, the Pointers led by 12 midway through the frame. Greenheck scored again late as UWSP held a five-point advantage heading to the fourth.
Pfeifer hit three buckets in the fourth quarter as UWSP maintained a lead until 1:45 remained in regulation. Neither team was able to break the stalemate and the game went to overtime tied at 55-55.
The Warhawks scored the first four points of overtime. A jumper by Pfeifer, a pair of free throws by
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) and two makes from the charity stripe by Greenheck pulled UWSP to a 61-61 tie to send the game into a second extra session.
Again it was UWW with the first four points. Pfeifer nailed a three-pointers to get UWSP within one. Two more free throws by Campion and a jumper by Krueger tied the game again, 68-68. But UWW scored six of the final seven points to prevail.
The Pointers return to Berg Gym on Wednesday (Feb. 2) to face UW-Stout at 7:00 p.m. It will be the annual Play4Kay game with fans encouraged to wear pink to support the cause.
