LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-10, 0-6) was held to a season-low in point as No. 10 UW-La Crosse (15-2, 6-2) defeated the Pointers, 64-44.
Seniors
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and
Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) had nine points each to lead the team in scoring.
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) added seven apiece.
Nelson scored UWSP's first four points and consecutive threes by
Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) and Mootz kept the Pointers close at 14-10. Wagner and
Cliff McCray (Madison, Wis./West) each hit from behind the arc and UWSP went ahead briefly, 16-14. UWL then closed the first half with a 14-5 run.
The Pointers came out fighting to open the second half. Mootz and
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) made field goals to cut the deficit to five. Buchanan added five, including a three-pointer, as UWSP got within two. Wagner cut the lead to one with a bucket with 11:03 remaining.
But UWSP's offense went cold with Mootz making the only bucket the remainder of the game. UWL outscored the Pointers 24-5 over the final 11:03 to win going away.
The Pointers return home to face UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 26). Tip-off on Bennett Court is slated for 7:00 p.m.
