MADISON, Wis. – For the first time in program history, the UW-Stevens Point tennis team has begun a season with a 5-0 record. The Pointers prevailed in their first road match with a 6-3 victory over NACC preseason favorite Edgewood on Wednesday.
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Kaylee Woelfel (Plymouth,Wis/Plymouth) rolled to identical 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Jenna Koepp (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) earned a 7-6, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles to seal the team win.
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) won at No. 5 singles by a 6-3, 6-4 score. She also teamed with
Grace Henes (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) to pick up an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Kaitlyn Hess (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) played No. 2 doubles and won, 8-6.
The Pointers also came extremely close to picking up other points as well. At No. 1 doubles,
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and Koepp battled to a tiebreak, falling 8-7 (7-2). Hess forced a super-breaker at No. 4 single coming up short, 4-6, 6-3, 7-10.
UWSP returns home for a tripleheader at University Courts on Saturday (Sept. 11). The Pointers play Lawrence at 11:00 a.m., Ripon at 2:00 p.m. and UW-Superior at 5:00 p.m.
