INDIANOLA, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point football team (2-0) found the end zone on three of its first four possessions and the Pointers got a 34-7 win at Simpson (0-2) on Saturday.
UWSP dominated both sides of the ball. The Pointers rushed for 311 yards and outgained the Storm 527-187 on offense. UWSP's defense held Simpson to just 19 rushing yards.
Max Herro (Dousman, Wis./Kettle Moraine) threw two touchdown passes and punter
Carter Unger (Waukesha, Wis./South) connected for one of his own.
Devin Baldridge (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire),
Joe Hare (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viatore) and
Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp, Wis./Thorp) were the recipients of the TD passes.
On the ground,
Vercion Gammel (Milwaukee, Wis./Lincoln) racked up 127 yards on 19 carries.
Seth Forbes (Manawa, Wis./Little Wolf) and
Jermaine Moore Jr. (North Chicago, Ill./Carmel Catholic) found the end zone on the ground.
The Pointers appeared to be stopped on the first offensive possession. But Unger tossed a pass to Kryzanski, who completed the 65-yard scamper to the end zone as UWSP took a 7-0 lead.
Gammel picked up chunks of yards on the next possession including a 33-yard run that put the Pointers in the red zone. Moore finished the task with a six-yard run to pay dirt and a 14-0 lead.
Herro found Baldridge on the first play of the second quarter and UWSP was soundly in front, 21-0.
Jawahn Downing (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) got the ball back moments later with an interception and return into Simpson territory. Herro connected with Hare on the next play and UWSP was on top 27-0.
The Storm got on the board just before halftime. In the third quarter neither team put points on the board. UWSP went 72 yards in its first drive, but were stopped at the goal line and turned the ball over on downs. The Storm drove the ball into UWSP territory, but
Tyler Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) got an interception to give the ball back to the Pointers.
UWSP cashed in on the turnover. Twelve plays later, Forbes capped the 76-yard rive with a one-yard plunge into the end zone for the 34-7 score.
Kryzanski led the UWSP defense with nine tackles. Seven different Pointers combined for five sacks.
The Pointers close out non-conference play with the home opener on Saturday (Sept. 18). The non-conference game is against UW-Stout at 2:00 p.m. in the annual Pink Game for Cancer. Tickets for the game are available at the gate one hour prior to kickoff.
