Pointers Sweep Stout to Wrap Successful Regular Season

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The Stevens Point softball team (22-15, 8-6) concluded the regular season with a sweep at UW-Stout (6-25, 0-14).  UWSP took early leads in both games for a 8-5 win in game one and a 9-2 victory in game two.  The Pointers' eight wins in league play in the most since 2008.
 
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) had five hits, three of which were doubles.  She had a career-best four RBI in game one and scored a run in game two.  Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) had three extra-base hits on the day with four RBI and three runs scored.
 
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) hit her fourth home run of the season, one of five hits on the day.  She scored twice in each game and drove in one in each half of the twin bill.
 
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) and Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) had four hits each on the day.  Luedtke had two RBI and two runs.  Buerger scored four runs. 
 
Game 1 – UWSP 8, UW-Stout 5
UWSP jumped out in front in the first inning.  Candre, Luedtke and Buerger hit singles to load the bases with one away.  Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) got an RBI when she was hit by a pitch.  Geiyer followed with a  two-RBI double and a third run scored on an error on the play.
 
The Blue Devils cut UWSP's lead in half with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.
 
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) led off the fifth with a double.  Two batters later, Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) hit a triple to push home a run.  With two down, Geiyer drove in a run with a single for a 6-2 lead.
 
After Stout got a run in the fifth, Candre got it right back with a one-out solo home run in the sixth.
 
Buerger started the seventh with a single.  Lawrence replaced her at first on a fielder's choice and stole second.  Geiyer added another RBI with her second double of the game.
 
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) earned her 16th win of the year with 6.1 innings pitched.  She struck out eight.  MacKenzie Honish (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) earned her first career save with two strikeouts to strand two aboard.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 9, UW-Stout 2
Luedtke singled with one away in the first and stole twice to get to third.  Buerger walked and stole second to give UWSP two in scoring position.  Lawrence drove in both with a double.
 
Geiyer hit a double to start the second.  With two outs, Candre plated Geiyer with a single.  Luedtke followed with an RBI single as UWSP went up, 4-0. 
 
The Pointers added single tallies in the third on an RBI single by Wakefield and again in the fourth on a run-scoring hit by Luedtke.
 
In the fifth, Lawrence doubled and Wakefield singled to put runner on the corners. An error by the Blue Devils gave UWSP another run.
 
Traxel began the seventh with a single and Buerger followed with a knock.  After a double steal, Lawrence plated one with a groundout.  Wakefield pushed home another on a sac bunt.
 
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) picked up the win with 5.2 innings.  Meyers and Honish scattered six hits in the win.
 
UWSP will await the conclusion of the regular season on Saturday to determine seeding and matchup for Tuesday's first round of the WIAC Tournament.
