LA CROSSE, Wis. – Senior
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) hit his program record 13th career triple as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (16-3, 11-1) finished off the season sweep of UW-La Crosse (12-8, 5-7). UWSP took game one, 8-3, before a big game by Simmons powered the Pointers to a 12-9 win in game two.
Simmons hit a grand slam and his record-setting triple in game two with three hits in the game. He drove in six in game two and scored three times on the day.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had five hits on the day, including a home run in each game. He had four RBI and scored twice.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) also had five hits on the day with an RBI and a run scored.
Jacob Lillge (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) had four hits, including a three-hit game in game two. He scored three times and drove in two.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) had three hits, including a home run. He drove in two and scored twice.
Game 1 – UWSP 8, UWL 3
Henwood gave UWSP a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run to right with one away. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the inning on two hits.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) hit a single with one down in the fifth. Lillge walked and
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Nelson singled to left and four runs scored on the play after an error on the catcher. Comer followed with a home run for a 6-1 lead.
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) drew a base on balls with one out in the eighth. He advanced on a wild pitch and came home on a double by Henwood.
In the ninth, Lillge started the frame with a single. Simmons was hit by a pitch and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs. Comer plated a run with a single. The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough.
Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) earned the victory with 5.0 innings of work with four strikeouts.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) pitched a scoreless frame.
Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) picked up a save with 3.0 innings of work to finish the game. He struck out two.
Game 2 – UWSP 12, UWL 9
Comer led off the second with a solo shot to center. Two batters later, Henwood was hit by a pitch.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) walked and a single by Finger loaded the bases. Lillge doubled home two runs. Duddleston drew a walk to load the bases again. Simmons blasted a grand slam as UWSP went ahead 7-0.
The Eagles got back two runs in the bottom of the second, but the Pointers tacked on one in the third. Baumann led off with a walk. He stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Duddleston.
UWL got four runs in the fourth on three hits, a trio of walks and a hit batter to make it 8-6.
Finger led off the fifth with a walk and Lillge singled to left. With one away, Simmons roped a triple to plate both runners, his program record 13th career three-bagger. Two batters later, Comer hit a double to put UWSP ahead 11-6.
Finger led off the sixth with a solo home run to left.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out three in a hitless 1.1 to start the game.
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton), Paulsen and
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) each struck out on in relief.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) earned the save with 2.0 innings pitched. He struck out two.
The Pointers return home to begin a six-game series versus UW-Whitewater on Tuesday (April 20). First pitch at Zimmermann Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
