Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Chase For Title Falls Short in Third Period for Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (7-4-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period, but visiting UW-Superior (7-3-0) scored three unanswered goals to take the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's) by a 3-2 final.

Neither team was able to break through in the first period and shots were nearly even with the Yellowjackets holding a 7-6 edge after one.

Early the second period, the Pointers earned the first power play of the game.  Just 38 seconds into the man advantage, Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill./) put UWSP in front.  Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, Ill./) and Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont./) added assists on the power-play goal.

Later in the second, the Pointers killed off their first penalty kill.  On the ensuing rush, Ryan Orgel (Los Angeles, Calif./) centered to a wide open Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) for a 2-0 lead.

At 11:41 of the second period, the Yellowjackets got on the board.  The Pointers held the lead until 9:12 of the third period as UWS tied the game.

Minutes later, UWSP was called for a penalty and the Yellowjackets capitalized for the eventual game-winning goal.

Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind./) made 29 saves in net for the Pointers.  UWS goaltender Myles Hektor stopped 22 shots in the win.

Friday's championship game was the seventh-consecutive appearance in the WIAC Tournament title game for the Pointers.  Raver and Roo each extended their point streaks to four games with the UWSP goals on Friday.
