STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (7-4-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period, but visiting UW-Superior (7-3-0) scored three unanswered goals to take the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's) by a 3-2 final.
Neither team was able to break through in the first period and shots were nearly even with the Yellowjackets holding a 7-6 edge after one.
Early the second period, the Pointers earned the first power play of the game. Just 38 seconds into the man advantage,
Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill./) put UWSP in front.
Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, Ill./) and
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont./) added assists on the power-play goal.
Later in the second, the Pointers killed off their first penalty kill. On the ensuing rush,
Ryan Orgel (Los Angeles, Calif./) centered to a wide open
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) for a 2-0 lead.
At 11:41 of the second period, the Yellowjackets got on the board. The Pointers held the lead until 9:12 of the third period as UWS tied the game.
Minutes later, UWSP was called for a penalty and the Yellowjackets capitalized for the eventual game-winning goal.
Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind./) made 29 saves in net for the Pointers. UWS goaltender Myles Hektor stopped 22 shots in the win.
Friday's championship game was the seventh-consecutive appearance in the WIAC Tournament title game for the Pointers. Raver and Roo each extended their point streaks to four games with the UWSP goals on Friday.
