STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (1-1, 1-1) could not complete the season sweep of UW-Whitewater as the Warhawks shot 73.7 percent from three-point range in a 91-78 win over the Pointers.
Philip Flory (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Oshkosh North) led the Pointers in scoring again, racking up 25 points. He also had a team-high six rebounds.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) were also in double-figures scoring with 19 and 13 points, respectively.
Cliff McCray (Madison, Wis./West) added nine points.
Senior
Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) hit from behind the arc 85 seconds into the game to give UWSP a 3-2 edge, the Pointers' only lead of the game. Nelson added four points, but UWW quickly built a 12-point lead. Mootz, Flory and McCray combined for nine-straight as UWSP Shaved the deficit to three at the midpoint of the first half.
Nelson hit a pair of triples down the stretch, but the Pointers were down 10, 44-34, at the half.
Flory and McCray scored UWSP's first 18 points of the second half, but the Pointers were unable to trim the deficit. Freshman
Anthony Espensen (Belvidere, Ill./North) scored his first collegiate points with a jumper in the second half.
Mootz nailed a pair of threes down the stretch and Flory buried one in the closing seconds, but UWW's torrid pace from deep was too much to overcome.
The Pointers face UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Feb. 10) for a 7:00 p.m. showdown on Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.
