EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-3, 0-2) fell behind early and never recovered in a 64-38 loss at No. 11 UW-Eau Claire (8-0, 2-0) on Saturday.
UWSP was led in scoring by
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) and
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) with seven points each.
Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) snagged a game-high 10 rebounds.
Thomson hit two free throws just over two minutes into the game as UWSP briefly held a 2-0 lead.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) hit field goals, but UWSP was behind 14-8 after one.
Nies and Thomson hit buckets early in the second quarter. Greenheck made UWSP's only other field goal of the quarter in the closing seconds as the Pointers trailed 30-17 at the half.
Thomson nailed a three to open UWSP's scoring in the third quarter. Courtney Kreuger and
Sierra Raine (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) made field goals, but the deficit reached 45-27 heading to the fourth.
Nies had four points early in the fourth quarter.
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) and
Julia Hickey (Silver Lake, Wis./Wilmot Union) each drilled a three-pointer late for the Pointers.
UWSP will travel to North Central for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday (Dec. 8). Tip-off in Naperville is set for 6:00 p.m.
