DE PERE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) earned a 67-49 win at St. Norbert (0-1) to open the season on Friday. Ten different Pointers scored in the win.
Freshman
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) posted a double-double in her collegiate debut. She had a team-high 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Senior
Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) was also in double figures with 10 points.
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) and
Anna Schoenike (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) both had nine points.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) buried a three-pointer just 17 seconds into the season to put UWSP up early. After a back-and-forth quarter,
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) drilled a three in the closing seconds as the Pointers were ahead 24-19 after one.
Gawlitta and Greenheck combined for 11 points as the Pointers held a steady lead in the second quarter. Campion again nailed a three-pointer in the final minute to put UWSP in front 40-32 at the half.
Nies put up UWSP first five points of the third quarter. Schoenike added four points as the Pointers outscored the Green Knights 15-6 in the quarter.
Slowik hit a couple buckets in the fourth. Gawlitta and Greenheck moved into double figures with a basket each in the final stanza as UWSP rolled to the finish line and the win.
The Pointers open a four-game home stand on Tuesday (Nov. 9). Tip-off versus Saint Mary's is set for 7:00 p.m.
