Second-Half Defensive Stand Gives UWSP Road Win

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-1) picked up another non-conference victory with a 57-50 win at Lakeland (2-3) on Tuesday.
 
Freshman Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had the biggest number of the night hauling in a game-high and season-best 14 rebounds.  She also scored eight points.
 
Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Sierra Raine (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) were in double figures for the Pointers.  Greenheck with a game-high 12 and Raine added 11.
 
Raine opened the scoring in the first minute of play and Gawlitta capped a 6-0 start for UWSP with a bucket.  Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) hit a jumper with four seconds left as UWSP held an 11-10 lead after one.
 
The Pointers posted their biggest offensive quarter in the second and so did Lakeland making the stanza a seesaw affair.  Greenheck hit back-to-back field goals and Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) completed an and-one to cap a 9-0 burst mid quarter for a 28-21 lead.
 
Gawlitta had two baskets early in the third, but consecutive threes by the Muskies put UWSP behind 36-33.  Raine scored a layup with 2:01 left in the quarter as UWSP took a 40-37 heading to the fourth.
 
Nies and Slowik hit layups to start the fourth as UWSP's defense held the Muskies scoreless for more than seven minutes spanning quarters. Gawlitta, Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) and Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) scored on consecutive possessions down the stretch as the lead hovered around six. Then with 29 seconds left, Slowik hit a layup to push the advantage back to two possessions as UWSP held on for the win.
 
UWSP will open league play at home on Dec. 1 with a 7:00 p.m. game against UW-Whitewater.
