Kopp Eclipses 500-Kill Plateau in NCAA Tournament Defeat

WAVERLY, Iowa – The No. 22 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team's NCAA Tournament run was cut short in the opening round in a 3-0 defeat to No. 21 Bethel (23-6).  Freshman Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) became just the fourth player in program history to reach 500 kills in a season with 13 in the match.

Kopp tied for the match-high with 13 kills and concluded the season with 501, the fourth-best single-season mark in Pointers' history.  She just missed another double-double with nine digs.

Senior Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led the Pointers with 11 digs.  Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) tied for the match-high with 30 assists.

The Pointers (26-8) got a kill from Kopp to halt a 4-0 run out of the gate from the Royals.  Senior Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) had a pair of kills as UWSP climbed within 7-5.  Kopp added five more kills in the set, but UWSP couldn't catch up as Bethel took the first set, 25-17.

Seniors Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) and Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had two kills each early in the second set as UWSP took a brief 7-5 lead.  Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had three kills mid-set as the Pointers held a 14-12 edge.  A 7-2 run by Bethel put the Royals in control in a 25-20 set two win.

Derousseau and Lau combined for seven kills early in the third set as UWSP held up to a 15-15 tie.  The Royals posted six-straight points, but a pair of kills by Kopp kept the Pointers close at 22-21.  Bethel capped the match with three-straight points and a 25-21 third set win.

The Pointers conclude their season with the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.  Head coach Lyndsay Kooi has guided the Pointers to 72 wins in her first three full seasons.
