Softball Splits Pair of Pitcher’s Duels in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (8-4) split games on what will be its final day in Florida on Saturday.  UWSP won its opener, 3-0, over Dominican (7-8) before falling to SUNY Geneseo (3-0) by a 4-1 final.

After a 19-run output on Friday, the Pointers were held to 12 hits in Saturday's two games.  However, UWSP's pitching was up to the task giving up just 10 hits over the two games.

Senior Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) was solid both at the plate and in the circle as the remaining teams in Florida staged an impromptu Senior Day for all on site.  Cohen recorded three hits on the day, including the game-winning RBI single against DU.  She also picked up a save in the game.

Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) and Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) each had a pair of hits on the day at the top of UWSP's lineup.  They each had an RBI and a run scored.

Game 1 – UWSP 3, Dominican 0
Luedtke led off the UWSP portion of the fourth with a resounding triple to the right-center gap.  Two batters later, Cohen broke the scoreless tie with a single through the left side.

Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) hit a two-out single in the fifth and stole second.  Candre singled her home to double the lead to 2-0.  She stole second and came in to score on a single by Luedtke.

Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) improved to 4-0 with 5.0 outstanding innings.  She had four strikeouts while not walking a batter and giving up just two hits.  Cohen tossed the final 2.0 for the save with three strikeouts.

Game 2 – UWSP 1, SUNY Geneseo 4
Candre led off the game with a single, but remained there.  Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) drew a leadoff walk in the second, but the Pointers were unable to manufacture a run.

The Knights broke through in third with an unearned run on just one hit.    UWSP got two on in the fourth on a double by Cohen and single by Greenaberg, but were again left empty-handed.

SUNY Geneseo added two more runs in the fifth, again with just one hit and taking advantage of a UWSP miscue.  The Knights got one more run in the sixth.

The Pointers finally got on the board in the seventh.  Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) hit a one-out double and stole third.  Maddix Bonnell (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) drew a walk to put runners on the corners.  Tkach singled in a run, but UWSP couldn't add anymore in the defeat.

Cohen started in the circle and scattered three hits in 2.1 frames.  She didn't allow and earned run and recorded the lone strikeout by UWSP pitching in the game.  Lauren Lindahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) also pitched 2.1 frames and allowed just one hit.  Tkach also gave up just one hit in the final 1.1 innings.

Cohen's save in game one was the 11th of her career, the third-most in program history.
