WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (14-6, 6-3) used a 15-point run in the second half to build a lead and held off UW-Whitewater (7-13, 2-7) late to secure a 74-72 win and the series sweep.
Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) had his second-straight double-double and fourth of the year with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led all scorers with 24 points.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) rounded out the trio of double-figure scorers for UWSP with 18 points.
Bublitz threw down a slam dunk as the Pointers tied the game at 4-4 nearly six minutes into the game. The Warhawks would go on a 17-6 run over the next seven minute as UWSP fell behind, 21-10.
Bublitz hit a pair of threes and eight-straight points for the Pointers as UWSP attempted to claw back before the half. Nelson hit a triple and had five points late as the deficit was just 36-31 at the break.
Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) and
Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) each hit from behind the arc as the Pointers opened the second half on a 10-4 run to take a one-point lead. Koerner hit another long-range shot and Nelson buried a three-pointer midway through the half for a 56-54 lead.
Bublitz nailed a three and Nelson hit again from deep in a 15-0 burst by UWSP to take a 10-point advantage with seven minutes remaining. Bublitz made UWSP's last field goal with 4:18 to go and the Pointers made 6-of-8 free throws to cling to the lead and the win.
UWSP will head west to UW-Eau Claire for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off on Saturday (Feb. 8).
