Men’s Basketball Pulls Off Monster Comeback to Win at Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (15-9, 7-6) scored 34 of the final 46 points to erase a 19-point deficit in the final 12 minutes in a 70-67 win at UW-Stout (5-19, 1-12) on Wednesday.

Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led all scorers with 19 points, 11 of which came in the 34-12 run to end the game.  Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) added 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.  Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) were also in double-figure scoring with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Bublitz and Spray scored UWSP's first six points, but the blue Devils doubled up the Pointers, 12-6, early.  After an Ehrke free throw, Stout put up 10-straight to go up 22-7.  The trio scored all 22 points for the Pointers in the first half as UWSP trailed 39-22 at the half.

Koerner hit a pair of triples early in the second half, but UWSP trailed by 19, 55-36, with 12:13 left in the game.  Bublitz drained a pair of free throws with just over 12 minutes to go and UWSP caught fire offensively from there going on a 24-2 run for a 60-57 lead.  The streak continued Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) nailing a three and Spray hammering down a dunk to put UWSP in front 68-58 with 1:56 to go.  A pair of threes by the Blue Devils ended the big run and UWSP held on late for the three-point victory.

The Pointers return home for the final time in 2019-20 for a Saturday (Feb. 22) matchup with the league frontrunners, UW-Platteville.  Tip-off at Quandt Fieldhouse is set for 7:00 p.m.  The Pointers have secured the No. 5 seed in next week's WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) and will play at the loser of Saturday's UW-Eau Claire-UW-La Crosse game on Tuesday in the first round.
