STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore
Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) scored just 1:08 into overtime as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (8-11-6) won 2-1 in the regular season finale against Concordia (WIs.) (8-12-2) on Tuesday. It was UWSP's fifth-consecutive overtime game.
The visiting Falcons opened the scoring 5:45 into the second period and held the 1-0 lead into the third period.
In the third,
Alana Achterkirch (St. Michael, Minn./North Wright County) tied the game with a shorthanded goal at the 4:57 mark. The unassisted goal was her third of the season.
With just six seconds remaining in regulation, the Pointers drew a penalty and began overtime on the power play. Heitsman picked up the puck behind the CUW net and circled to the blue line. Her shot found its way into the net for the game-winner, her first career GWG.
Senior
Marit Larson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) earned the win playing the final 28:02 of the game with nine saves.
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) started and made 13 saves. CUW goaltender Annalina Van Hercke had 29 saves.
The Pointers will face Northland in the first round of the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at Ice Hawks Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
