Grubbs Scores Goal Late to Help Women’s Hockey Avoid Shutout

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (7-7-3, 1-4-0) got a late goal from senior Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) to avoid being shut out in an 8-1 loss to No. 8 UW-River Falls (13-3-1, 4-1-0) on Saturday.

The Falcons opened the scoring 3:19 into the game.  UWRF added a second goal late in the first period to put UWSP down two after one.

Just 34 seconds into the second period, the Falcons tallied again, opening the flood gates to a five-goal period.  Midway through the third, UWRF made it 8-0.

Grubbs picked up a loose puck in the defensive zone and chipped it past a Falcon player for a breakaway goal at 13:53 to get UWSP on the board.

Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) and Marit Larson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) combined to make 34 saves in the loss.  Sami Miller had nine saves for UWRF.

The Pointers head to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Jan. 25) for a 2:00 p.m. match-up with the league leaders.
