MEQUON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's wrestling team won eight of the 10 matches and took a dominating 40-11 dual victory over host Concordia (Wis.) on Thursday.
 
Matt Berlin (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) continued his winning ways in 2020 with a fall in the first period (1:55) at 133.  Mason Wheeler (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) needed just 2:18 to pin his opponent in the 149 match as UWSP pulled ahead, 12-11.
 
Luke Smiley (Plainfield, Ill./North) earned a tech fall win, 17-2, at 157.  Jordan Weinzetl (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) remained perfect in 2020 with a 12-0 major decision at 165.  The closest match of the night came at 174 with Austin Stebane (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) taking a 14-9 decision for the Pointers.
 
Dan Squires (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Jerry Lipke (Milton, Wis./Milton) each needed less than a minute to win by fall.  Squires' pin took 48 seconds in the 184 match and Lipke's occurred at 58 seconds at 197.  Ben Gunderson (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton) wrapped up the dual victory with a 12-2 major decision at 285.
 
The Pointers host UW-Whitewater in conference action next Thursday (Jan. 23).  The dual will be sponsored by Sport Clips and UWSP will host 9-year-old Miguel Duran, who is battling Rhabdomyosarcoma, as an honorary captain.
