Pointers Take Down Lakeland in Four-Set Road Win

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Four UW-Stevens Point volleyball players contributed double-figure digs as the Pointers (3-1) downed Lakeland (2-3) in four sets (27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22) on Wednesday.
 
Senior April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) and junior Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) recorded double-doubles for the Pointers.  Gehl had 26 kills and 19 digs.  Adams recorded 54 assists and 23 digs.
 
Freshman Mazie Nagel (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) also had 23 digs, tying for the game-high with Adams.  Sophomore Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) added 20 digs.
 
Senior Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) registered one of her 16 kills to thwart a set point and spark a 3-0 run as UWSP prevailed in the first set, 27-25.  Six combined kills from Emme, Gehl and Jamie Schmitz (Cashton, Wis./Cashton) gave the Pointers a 10-4 lead and UWSP held off the Muskies to go up 2-0.
 
In the third set, Lakeland used a 9-0 run to gain a 23-17 advantage in a set win for the Muskies.  Gehl recorded eight kills in the fourth set as the Pointers pulled ahead mid set to close out the match.
 
UWSP returns home to host the Pointer Invitational this Friday and Saturday (Sept 6 & 7).  The Pointers take on Concordia at 3:00 p.m. on Friday in Berg Gym to kick off the weekend.
