Pointers Upend Wabash with Big Plays, Late Drive

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) connected with Devin Baldridge (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) on a seven-yard touchdown with 1:23 left as the UW-Stevens Point football team (1-1) beat visiting No. 21 Wabash (0-1) by a 31-28 final.

Urmanski completed 24 of 35 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns.  He connected with Baldridge six times for 86 yards, the most by UWSP receivers.

Junior Jahi Stigall (Chicago, Ill./DePaul College Prep) rushed 13 times for 90 yards and a touchdown to lead the Pointers.  He also had three kickoff returns for 37 yards.

Defensively, Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp, Wis./Thorp) led the Pointers with eight tackles.  Felix King (Chicago, Ill./John Adams), James Fay (Elgin, Ill./Central) and Berkley Corvino (Weston, Wis./DC Everest) each added six tackles.

UWSP took the opening kickoff and after four rushes by ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) took the lead.  Urmanski hooked up with freshman Joe Aguilera (Dorchester, Wis./Abbotsford) on a 64-yard pass as the Pointers took a 7-0 lead.

The Little Giants marched down the field on the ensuing possession going 75 yards in 13 plays to tie the game.

On Wabash's next possession, Jacob Morgan (Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) striped the Little Giants' quarterback and Michael Stephenson (Madison, Wis./East) recovered.  Two plays later, Stigall scampered in from 18 yards out for a 14-7 lead.

The Little Giants were driving in the first possession of the second quarter, but instead of attempting a field goal, Wabash tried a fake.  UWSP's Stephenson made the tackle a yard short of the first down and the Pointers took over.

The Pointers seized the momentum and Urmanski completed 3-of-4 passes, including a 35-yard pass to fellow senior Jonte Webb (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) as UWSP pulled ahead 21-7.

Wabash drove 65 yards on the opening drive of the second half to cut UWSP's lead to 21-14.  Early in the fourth quarter, another long drive – 71 yards in 16 plays – allowed the Little Giants to tie the game at 21-21.

UWSP didn't' back down as Urmanski put together a 13-play drive and Victor Ponterio (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Pointers a 24-21 edge.

Later in the fourth, Wabash took its first lead of the game, aided by a drive-extending penalty.  Eight plays and 92 yards later, the Little Giants took a 28-24 lead with just 2:34 left.

Urmanski went back to work and three completions later, UWSP was at the Wabash 33.  Completions to Webb and Baldridge positioned the Pointers at the seven-yard line.  Urmanski and Baldridge connected again on the next play for the game-winning touchdown with 1:23 remaining.

The Pointers' defense stopped Wabash on the next drive and three kneel-downs later had a victory.

Saturday's home opener was UWSP's 10th annual Pink Game for Cancer and this year's game raised $44,239.51.

UWSP wraps up non-conference play next Saturday (Sept. 21) at Dakota State with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
