WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (14-24, 6-18) saw its season end with a sweep at the hands of No. 16 UW-Whitewater (30-9, 21-3) on Saturday. The Pointers were run-ruled in game one, 13-3, in seven innings. In game two, UWSP fell by an 8-2 score.
The Pointers mustered just nine hits over the twin bill on Saturday, with no hitter having a multi-hit outing in either game for UWSP. Seniors
Will Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) had a hit in each game for the Pointers. Mrozinski had an RBI and
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) drove in two.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWW 13 (7)
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) hit back-to-back singles to begin the game. Two batters later, Iloncaie singled to load the bases. Mrozinski drove in a run with a groundout and the other two runners came in to score on a throwing error on the play.
The Pointers held the lead until the fourth. A leadoff home run sparked a 10-run inning as UWW sent 14 batters to the plate and scored with the aid of nine hits.
In the bottom of the seventh, three hits, including a two-run home run, completed the run-rule victory for UWW.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, UWW 8
The Warhawks forged ahead in the first with a run on one hit as a wild pitch gave UWW a 1-0 lead.
Mrozinski singled to begin the fifth. Two batters later, Iloncaie singled to put two aboard. Then with two away, Duddleston doubled to drive in both and give the Pointers a 2-1 lead. The three hits in the inning were the only three of the game for UWSP.
UWW used a triple and a sac fly in the seventh to tie the game a 2-2. In the eighth, the Warhawks regained the lead for good with six runs on five hits and a UWSP error.
The Pointers end the season with a 10-game losing streak and 14-of-15. Simmons set the single season school record with eight triples this year. Nelson led UWSP in hitting with a .357 average. Simmons was just behind at .354 and led UWSP with 58 hits. He hit safely in 33 of the 38 games on the year.
