Baseball Sweeps Finlandia Behind Pitching Gems, Hot Sticks

MAUSTON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (12-10, 4-4) scored 11 times in the first inning of game one and never looked back in a run-rule sweep of Finlandia (3-19, 0-10) on Sunday in league play.  The Pointers doubled that 11-run inning in a 22-1 game one victory.  UWSP took game two by a 12-1 final, both games won in seven-inning, run-rule fashion.

Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) continued his hot hitting with three hits on the day.  He drove in five runs and scored twice.

Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) collected six hits on the day with five RBI and six runs scored.  Will Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) drove in six runs in game one.  Weston Nelson (Sheboygan, Wis./North) had four hits, three runs and three RBI on the day.

On the mound, Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) went six innings in game one and allowed just two hits.  Carter Daniels (Montello, Wis./Montello) pitched all seven innings in game two with four hits allowed.  Stodola struck out six and Daniels fanned eight.

Game 1 – UWSP 22, Finlandia 1 (7)
The Pointers blew the first game open early with 11 runs on eight hits and three Finlandia errors in the first inning.  Simmons tripled to push home the first run.  UWSP sent 16 batters to the plate in the inning and eight of the nine starters had an RBI in the frame.

UWSP added two more runs in the second on just one hit.  Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) had a sac fly and Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) scored on a wild pitch.

The Lions got a run in the third as a walk came around to score on a two-out single.

The Pointers scored single tallies in the third and the fourth innings on sac flies by Iloncaie, but left the bases loaded in both frames.

In the fifth, UWSP scored six times on five hits, including a bases-clearing double from Iloncaie.

In the sixth, the Pointers scored another on back-to-back hits by Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) and Comer to complete the scoring.

Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the win.

Game 2 – UWSP 12, Finlandia 1 (7)
UWSP pulled ahead in the second inning on RBI singles by Mrozinski and Simmons with two outs.

In the third, UWSP put up a crooked number with six runs on four hits.  Simmons missed a grand slam by a few feet with a three-RBI double off the wall in right.

Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) tripled with one away in the fifth to spark another rally.  RBI hits by Comer, Nate Jackan (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Weston Nelson (Sheboygan, Wis./North) extended the lead to 11-0.

After Finlandia broke up Daniels' no-hit bid in the sixth, UWSP tacked on a run in the bottom of the frame.

The Lions avoided a shut out in the seventh with a leadoff solo home run, but Daniels finished the complete game win by stranding two aboard.

The Pointers and Lions wrap up the series with a doubleheader in Mauston on Monday (April 15). First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
