ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-9) earned a split at Augustana (11-9) on Saturday. The Pointers fell in game one, 12-7, but rallied late in game two for a 5-1 win.
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) led UWSP with three hits on the day, including her first home run of the season. She drove in two runs, scored a run in each game and drew a walk in each game. She also pitched her first complete game of the season in the game two victory.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) also had three hits over the twin bill. She scored a run in each game.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North),
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) and
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) recorded hits in both games for UWSP.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, Augustana 12
Cohen led off the game with a solo home run. Two batters later, Candre doubled and came home on a single by Greenaberg.
Jordyn Hynst (West Bend, Wis./East) began the UWSP second with a walk. She moved to second on a sac bunt by
Erin Schmitt (Waupun, Wis./Waupun) and advanced to third on a groundout. An Auggies' error gave the Pointers a 3-0 lead.
Luedtke singled to start the third and advanced on a sac bunt by Johnson. Hynst drew a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Schmitt singled to drive in one.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) drove home another with a ground out. Another Augustana error allowed the third run of the inning as the lead grew to 6-0.
The Auggies got two runs back in the third on four hits. In the fourth, Augustana scored eight times on five hits, including a grand slam, to take a 10-6 lead. Two more runs crossed the plate in the fifth as the Auggies took a 12-6 lead.
In the seventh, Johnson reached on an error.
Sophie Lee (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) singled and Schmitt walked to load the bases. After a fielder's choice putout at home, Cohen drove in a run on a sac fly, but UWSP couldn't rally back late.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, Augustana 1
The Pointers took the lead in the third. Luedtke hit a one-out double and scored two batters later on an Augustana error.
After consecutive two-out singles put runners on the corners, the Auggies executed a double steal to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
Candre began the sixth with a double. Greenaberg walked and with two outs, another error by AC plated the go-ahead run. The second run of the inning came home on a wild pitch as UWSP took a 3-1 lead.
Wakefield hit a double to start the seventh. Cohen drew a walk and both runners advanced on a sac bunt by
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North). Consecutive walks to Candre and Greenaberg pushed home a run. Johnson singled to extend the lead to 5-1.
Cohen tossed all seven innings for the win. She struck out three and did not issue a walk.
The Pointers travel to Iowa on Sunday (March 31) for a doubleheader against Grinnell. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
