AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (4-2) opened the second half of their Florida trip with a 8-5 comeback win over Farmingdale State (6-4).
Sophomore
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Fellow sophomore
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) extended his season-opening hitting streak to six games with a triple in the seventh inning. He drove in a run and scored two.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander),
Nolan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) and
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) each collected two hits in the game. Comer drove in three runs while Duddleston had an RBI and a run scored.
Farmingdale State put up a four-spot on three hits to lead off the game in the top of the first.
The Pointers responded in the bottom half of the inning, getting three runs back. With one out, Simmons walked, stole second and scored on a double down the left field line by Nelson.
Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) walked to put runners on first and second. Comer's RBI double pushed both runners home.
UWSP tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth.
Neal Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) walked to begin the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Duddleston hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Matson.
The Pointers took a 7-4 lead in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on five hits. Mrozinski reached first on a single to the shortstop and scored when Simmons tripled to centerfield. Following a Rams' pitching change, Simmons scored on Nelson's single to left. Nelson stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Comer's RBI single plated Nelson.
Farmingdale got one run back on two hits in the top of the eighth.
UWSP answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Duddleston hit a two-out double to left, advanced to third and then scored on two wild pitches.
Pointers' starter
Cale Cuddie (Loyal, Wis./Loyal) threw 2.0 innings, giving up three hits and four runs.
Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) earned his first win of the season, tossing 5.0 shutout innings, striking out two batters.
Matthew Morgan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) came in for 0.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits.
Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) picked up the save, closing out the final 1.1 innings of the game.
The Pointers faces Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Wednesday (March 20) in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 8:00 a.m. CT.
