STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 1 ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (27-0-2) shut out No. 3/4 St. Norbert (23-5-3) by a 3-0 score in the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship quarterfinals on Saturday. The win was a program record 29th-consecutive unbeaten game for the Pointers.
Sophomore goaltender
Connor Ryckman (Minesing, Ont.) backed up his WIAC Player of the Year honor with 17 saves in the shutout. It was his 24th win of the year, a single season program record for the Pointers. The shutout was the third of the year for Ryckman.
Late in the first period,
Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, Mich.) put the Pointers in front. He fired a shot that was turned aside, but he pursued and flipped a backhander into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) and
Chris Allemon (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) picked up assists on the goal.
UWSP extended its lead to 2-0 early in the second.
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, Okla.) tapped home the puck into an empty net off a feed from
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich.). O'Brien added his second point of the night with an assist on the goal.
A late power play in the second gave the Pointers a 3-0 lead.
TJ Roo (Champlin, Minn.) walked out from behind the goal and after his initial shot crept up the shoulder of SNC goaltender T.J. Black, he tapped in the rebound.
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) and
Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich.) tallied assists for UWSP.
SNC goaltender Black took the loss made 32 saves in the loss.
UWSP moves on the Frozen Four to face Hobart. Faceoff at K.B. Willett is slated for 7:00 p.m. SUNY Geneseo and Norwich will meet in the other semifinal game at 3:00 p.m. Tickets for all three games of the NCAA Championship go on sale on Tuesday.
