WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (15-6, 7-4) quickly vaporized a 4-0 deficit with a 16-0 run and a 65-47 win at UW-Whitewater (14-8, 3-8) on Wednesday. The Pointers held the Warhawks to a season-low points scored in a game.
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) led all scorers with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field.
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) added 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting and he went 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Eight other players scored for UWSP in the win.
Fredrickson made the first UWSP basket a minute and a half in to spark a big run by the Pointers. Five other Pointers scored in the 16-0 run as UWSP went ahead 16-4. After five-straight points from UWW was met by three-made free throws by Dodge.
Dodge drilled a pair of threes with
Koko Songolo (Madison, Wis./Memorial) burying a triple in between as the Pointers extended the lead to 28-12 with 6:03 to go in the half. Dodge hit again from behind the arc to stop an 8-0 run by UWW. Fredrickson scored five-straight and the Pointers lead at the half, 36-20.
Dodge scored the opening points of the second half as UWSP maintained a sizeable lead. Back-to-back threes by Fredrickson and
Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) pushed the advantage to 20 at 48-28 with 12:54 to go. Knez drilled another long-range shot as the lead reached 23 with 11:15 remaining.
Chaz Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) scored five late points, including the completion of an and-one as the Pointers rolled to the 18-point win.
The Pointers travel to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Feb. 9) looking to hand the No. 3 Titans their first league loss of the year.
