Pointers Falter Late, Lose WIAC Title Game in Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (18-9) scored just two points in the final four minutes of the game as the homestanding UW-Platteville Pioneers (18-10) ended on a 16-2 run to win the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's) by a 70-57 score.
 
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led the Pointers with 15 points, 13 of which he scored in the first half.  Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) added 14 points on 3-of 7 shooting from three-point range.  Both Bublitz and Fredrickson led the Pointers with five rebounds apiece.
 
UWSP shot just 39.6 percent from the field while the Pioneers went 25-for-50 (.500) from the floor.  UWP scored 12 fast break points, nine in the second half to just four by UWSP.
 
Bublitz scored UWSP's first five points as the Pointers trailed early, 7-5.  Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) completed an and-one to give the Pointers an 8-7 edge.  Fredrickson buried a three and Bublitz got three the old-fashioned way to tie the game at 18-18 with 10:34 left in the half.
 
Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) scored five-straight points as UWSP led briefly at 24-23.  Bublitz hit his second triple of the half to knot the game at 27-27.  Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) nailed a three-pointer late and UWSP trailed by a 35-32 score at the half.
 
Ehrke drilled a three-pointer two minutes into the second half, but the Pioneers started on an 11-5 run.  Fredrickson drained a three in the midst of seven-straight by UWSP to get within two.  UWP scored eight of the next nine points and UWSP trailed 54-45 with 8:34 remaining.
 
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Fredrickson scored on consecutive possessions as UWSP tried to come back.  Dodge hit a three and Fredrickson buried a triple as UWSP took a 55-54 lead with 4:25 to go.  The Pioneers went 4-for-4 from the field and scored 16 of the final 18 points to take the win.
 
UWSP will await a potential at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.  The selection show is Monday (Feb. 25) at 11:30 a.m. CT.
