Pointers Go Cold Late in Regular Season Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-17, 4-10) suffered a 68-54 loss to visiting UW-Platteville (11-14, 5-9) in the regular season finale on Saturday.
 
Junior Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored a game-high 17 points for UWSP.  Freshman Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) recorded her seventh double-double of the year with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.   Sophomore Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) also scored in double digits with 10 points.
 
The Pointers led after each of the first three quarter, but went scoreless in the fourth.
 
Baehman scored the first five UWSP points, including a three-pointer, as the Pointers took a 5-2 lead early.  Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) and Cerrato each scored, but a 6-0 run gave the Pioneers a 12-9 edge.  The Pointers returned the favor with their own 6-0 run powered by Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) and Jordyn Ellis (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne)Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) scored late and UWSP led 17-14 after one.
 
The Pointers caught fire from behind the arc in the second.  Baehman, Cerrato and Greenheck each hit twice from three-point range and UWSP went to the half ahead, 38-30.
 
Cerrato hit her third three of the game to begin the third and pushed the lead to 11.  Platteville scored the next eight points to close within three, but five-straight by Cerrato put UWSP up 46-38.  A late bucket by Greenheck helped the Pointers hold a 54-51 advantage heading to the fourth.
 
The Pointers went ice cold in the final quarter.  UW-Platteville scored all 17 points in the quarter and UWSP went 0-for-14 from the field.
 
The Pointers will be the six-seed in next week's WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's) and will travel to UW-La Crosse on Wednesday in first round action.  Tip-off at Mitchell Hall Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.
