RICHARDSON, Texas – Senior
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) hit a jump shot with 0.9 seconds remaining as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (8-3) finished the non-conference slate with a 62-60 win over East Texas Baptist University (7-2) on Sunday.
Bublitz again led all players in scoring with 20 points. He pulled down eight rebounds, tying fellow senior
Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) for the game-high.
Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) and
Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) were also in double figures for the Pointers with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Spray also racked up a career-high three blocked shots.
Bublitz and Koerner nailed consecutive three-pointers as UWSP opened the game on a 10-0 run. Koerner hit again from behind the arc to stop an 8-0 run by the Tigers.
Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) and Koerner drilled threes as the lead grew to seven with each make. Late in the half, Bublitz completed a pair of and-ones and the Pointers led 36-31 midway through.
Koerner and
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) each put through three-pointers as UWSP open the second half on a 10-3 run to push the lead to 13. Spray drained a jumper with 8:18 remaining to give UWSP a 56-45 advantage. But for the second-straight day, the remaining offense for the Pointers was provided by Bublitz as ETBU worked a 15-4 run into a 60-60 tie with 2:20 to go. Bublitz broke the tie on a jumper with 0.9 seconds left to give UWSP the win.
The Pointers open league play on Saturday (Jan. 4) at UW-River Falls. Tip-off at Don Page Arena is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
