Bublitz’s Big Game Lifts Pointers Past Wilmington

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had a career day to help the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-0) rally for a 70-69 win over Wilmington (1-4) at the Christopher Newport Invitational on Saturday.

Bublitz completed an and-one with 2.9 seconds remaining as the Pointers rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit.  His game-winning free throw was his 18th of the game as he set a program record going 18-for-18 at the charity stripe.  It was also his career-best 28th point of the game.

Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.  Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) went 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the second half and had 11 points.  Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) was also in double figures with 10 points.

Bublitz made three free throws 15 seconds into the game and Spray made a layup at 15:05 to tie the game at 7-7.  The Pointers went ice cold from there until Mootz made a bucket nearly 10 minutes later to make it a 27-11 game.  Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) capped a 16-3 run to end the half as UWSP pulled within 30-27 at the break.

The Pointers' first eight points of the second half were scored by Bublitz and the Quakers built a 19-point lead with 8:21 remaining.  Mootz hit the first of his threes with 6:00 to go to make it 58-47.  With just under two minutes left, Bublitz completed an and-one to cut the deficit to single digits.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Mootz got UWSP within three with 31 seconds left.  A Spray layup with 18 seconds left made it a one-point game.  After Wilmington made just one free throw, Bublitz drove the lane and was fouled as he made a jump shot with 2.9 seconds to tie the game at 69-69.  He drained the free throw and UWSP's defense held at the buzzer for the comeback win.

UWSP faces host and No. 11 Christopher Newport on Sunday (Dec. 1) at 4:00 p.m. ET to close out the weekend.
