UWSP Football Doomed by Turnovers in Regular Season Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (3-7, 2-5) saw its season conclude with a 34-17 loss to visiting UW-La Crosse (7-3, 5-2) on Saturday.

Senior quarterback Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) completed 26 of 54 passes for 330 yards.  He connected for two touchdowns, but three costly interceptions shadowed his final UWSP game.

Fellow senior Jonte Webb (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) caught nine passes for 129 yards.  He had one of the two UWSP touchdown receptions.

Junior James Thompson (Steele, N.D./Steele) made the other touchdown catch for the Pointers.

Defensively, Nevada Laabs (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) led UWSP with 14 tackles, eight were solo tackles.  He also forced one of UWSP's three forced fumbles.

UWL took the opening drive 75 yards in just eight plays to take a 7-0 lead.

The Pointers quickly responded.  Four completions, each of 10 yards or longer, by Urmanski for a scoring drive of their own.  Thompson hauled in a 15-yard catch for the touchdown capping the 10-play drive as UWSP tied the game at 7-7.

Two plays later, the Pointers recovered a fumble deep in UWL territory.  The Eagles stifled the Pointers as UWSP turned the ball over on down without capitalizing.

UWL drove down to the UWSP four yard line on the ensuing drive.  The Pointers' defense reared up and stopped the Eagles on fourth down to regain possession.  But two plays into the second quarter, UWL returned an interception to the end zone for a 14-7 lead.

Later in the second, another UWSP turnover led to a UWL field goal as the Pointers trailed, 17-7, at the half.

UWSP got a big run from running back ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) on the first drive of the second half.  After the drive stalled, Victor Ponterio (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) kicked a field goal to get UWSP within 17-10.

The Eagles used a big run of their own on the next possession and punched it in to up the lead, 24-10.   After the teams traded fumbles, UWSP got back to work.  Urmanski hit Webb from 25 yards out and the Pointers again made it a one-score game.

Two turnovers in the fourth quarter by UWSP resulted in 10 points by the Eagles to complete the scoring.

The Pointers won three of five home games this season.  Urmanski threw 16 touchdown passes on the season and had 29 in his career.  Webb caught eight of those touchdowns this season and had 12 in his career.
