BLAINE, Minn. – The No. 5-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (4-2-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and won, 5-1, at Bethel (1-3-1) on Saturday night. The Pointers scored 11 goals in the two games in Minnesota on the weekend.
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis./) put UWSP in front just 2:19 into the game with his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn./) and
Drew McLean (Waterford, Mich./) provided assists on the play.
Captain
Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas/) scored his first of the night at 8:46 on assists from
Wesley Ashley (Pittsburgh, Pa./) and
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./).
The Pointers made it 3-0 on a
Steven Quagliata (Bartlett, Ill./) goal at 15:22. His first of the season was assisted by
Zach Zech (South Lyon, Mich./) and
Ryan MacKellar (Indianapolis, Ind./).
Miller netted his second of the night at 5:49 of the second period with
Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C./) and Fader assisting on the play.
Bethel final got on the board in the third period, but the Pointers scored 31 seconds later. It was Quagliata with his second of the night with McElhenie getting the assist.
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont./) made 23 saves in the first two periods.
Connor Duffy (Laguna Niguel, Calif./) made his Pointer debut in the third period and made seven saves. BU goaltender Ridge Gerads made 30 saves.
The Pointers travel to River Falls to open WIAC play on Friday. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Hunt Arena.
