Ehrke Double-Double Powers Pointers in Season-Opening Victory

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (1-0) got a double-double from senior Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) in a 77-59 win in the season opener over visiting St. Olaf (1-1) on Wednesday.

Ehrke led the Pointers with 18 points and 15 rebounds, both career highs.  He also had four steals and four assists in the win.

Fellow seniors Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) were also in double figures with 17 and 13 points, respectively.  Sophomore Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) poured in 16 points on 4-for-4 three-point shooting.

Bublitz scored an and-one to get the season underway and an early 3-0 lead.  Three-pointers by Ehrke, Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) and Peter Timmerman (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) helped UWSP built a 22-17 lead and Spray threw down a dunk as part of a 7-0 run.  Four more three-pointers down the stretch gave the Pointers a 46-29 halftime lead.

In the second half, Bublitz had four points in an 8-0 spurt as the Pointers took a 23-point lead.  Mootz had eight of 10 UWSP points through the middle of the half.  He added two more threes to complete the scoring as the Pointers won going away.

UWSP returns to action on Nov. 23 with a 2:00 p.m. game at Edgewood College.
