Volleyball Splits Matches at CUW on Saturday

MEQUON, Wis. – Three different Pointers had double-doubles as the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (22-8) split matches on Saturday taking down Carroll (14-12) in five sets before suffering a sweep by host Concordia (16-9).

Senior April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) had double-doubles in both matches with 27 kills and 25 digs on the day.  Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) also had double-doubles in both matches with 79 assists and 33 digs over the two matches.

Senior Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) had a double-double against Carroll with 15 kills and 10 digs.  Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led the Pointers in digs in both matches with 24 and 18, respectively.

UWSP 3, Carroll 2 (25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-6)
Gehl had kills for the first five UWSP points as the Pointers opened a 6-1 lead in set one and never trailed.  In the second set, Hailey Jarr (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) had two of her six kills as UWSP used a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 lead.

Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) and Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) combined for six kills in the third set, but the Pioneers held on for the win.  It was a 6-2 run by Carroll breaking a 10-10 tie that swayed the fourth set in favor of the Pioneers to force a fifth set.

Emme sparked a 7-0 run with a kill as the Pointers reversed a 3-1 deficit.  A Gehl kill and a block by Lawson secured the victory for the Pointers.

UWSP 0, CUW 3 (24-26, 23-25, 16-25)
Gehl had four kills late, but the Falcons slipped past UWSP with the final two points after a 24-24 tie in the first set.  The lead teetered back and forth throughout the second set before the Falcons again broke a late tie with the final two points.  The Pointers fell behind 7-1 early in the third set and were unable to recover in a straight-set loss to CUW.

The Pointers travel to regular season champion UW-Whitewater on Friday (Nov. 1) to close out the regular season with a 7:00 p.m. match.
