ADRIAN, Mich. – Junior
Brooke Thurber (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) won her weight class to highlight the first ever UW-Stevens Point women's wrestling competition on Saturday at the Bulldog Open.
Results
At 116, Thurber and Nelson advanced to face each other in the finals. Thurber prevailed with a 13-0 tech fall in 1:35. She reached the finals with consecutive falls to go 3-0 on the day. Nelson recorded the first win in Pointers' history with a fall over Angelique Terrones-Cruz of Lindenwood. She won by an 18-11 decision to advance to the finals.
Megan Struble (Seymour, Wis./Seymour Community) earned a 12-2 tech fall in her first consolation match at 143 over Belle Erhardt of Lindenwood.
The Pointers other wrestlers in the first-ever women's wrestling competition were
Maya Veenstra (Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) (109),
Morgan Bethea (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) (123),
Addison Young (New London, Wis./New London) (130) and
Kaja Montplaisir (Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River) (136).
UWSP hosts Lakeland on Nov. 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the first home dual in program history.
