STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 1 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (17-0-2) beat the Saint John's Johnnies (7-7-3), 4-1, on Saturday.
Following a scoreless first period, the Pointers jumped out to a 1-0 lead one minute into the second with Colin Raver (Bartlett, Ill.) lighting the lamp. Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, Okla.) picked up the assist.
Stephan Beauvais (Shelby Township, Mich.) netted his first career shorthanded goal with 2:00 remaining in the second period. Passes by Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) and Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas) led to a breakaway by Beauvais with him burying the puck in the back of the net.
Saint John's scored a power-play goal at 2:29 of the third period to pull the Johnnies within one.
A blue line goal from Ryan Bittner (Crookston, Minn.) gave the Pointers a 3-1 lead. Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) picked up his second assist of the night.
Stephan Beauvais (Shelby Township, Mich.),with his second of the night, put the game out of reach for the Johnnies, scoring an empty-net goal to make the score 4-1 with one minute and 10 seconds remaining in the game.
Sophomore goaltender Connor Ryckman (Minesing, Ont.) improved to 16-0-1, making 15 saves in the game. Saint John's netminder Mac Berglove took the loss, making 16 saves in the game.
The Pointer wrap up their homestand on Friday (Jan. 18) against WIAC-rival, No. 3-ranked, UW-Eau Claire. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
