STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) recorded her 15th double-double in 21 matches this season to lead the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (14-7, 2-1) to a four-set win over UW-Platteville (6-11, 0-3) on Saturday.
Gehl led all players with 23 kills in the win. She added 11 digs to complete the double-double.
Sophomore
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had 38 assists and freshman
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led UWSP with 15 digs.
The Pointers fell behind, 6-3, early, but a 6-0 run gave UWSP the lead. A four-point spurt by the Pioneers was answered with a 14-4 run as the Pointers pulled away for the set one win.
UWP opened the second set on a 4-1 run and rolled to a 25-12 set win as the Pioneers hit a game-high .448.
Gehl opened the third set with an emphatic kill and UWSP took a 4-2 lead early. The Pointers recorded 10 of the final 12 points, punctuated by consecutive kills by Gehl to take a 2-1 lead.
Rachel Hein (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Maddie Lawson (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) combined for three kills and a block during a 6-0 run as the Pointers went up 9-3 in the fourth. Gehl spurred a 6-1 run with a trio of kills for an 18-9 lead. Lawson set up match point with a kill and Gehl finished the match with her 23rd kill.
UWSP heads to the UW-Whitewater Dig Panici Classic next Friday (Oct. 5) to begin a nearly month-long road swing. UWSP faces Gustavus Adolphus at 7:00 p.m. to begin play in Whitewater.
