Pointers Suffer Sweep at the Hands of No. 2 UWW

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (24-12, 15-7) suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of No. 2 UW-Whitewater (27-5, 17-3) on Saturday.  The Pointers fell in game one, 13-3, and were held to just three hits in a 10-1 game two loss.
 
Freshmen Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis. /West) and Christian Zamudio (Kenosha, Wis. /Tremper) each had two hits on the day.  Will Iloncaie drove in two runs.  Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) and Jordan Carlson (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) each added a run batted in.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWW 13
A walk and a two-run home run in the first inning put the Warhawks up early and set the tone for the day.  Later in the inning, UWW added another to take a 3-0 lead.
 
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis. /Franklin) drew a walk to start the second.  Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls ) singled and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt.  Iloncaie singled to plate both runners as UWSP trailed 3-2.
 
UWW scored six times in the third on four hits and two UWSP errors.  Two more Warhawks' runs scored in the fourth and another in the fifth made it 12-2.
 
Zamudio singled to begin the sixth.  Neal Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) followed with a single and with two away, Duddleston hit a run-scoring single.
 
The Warhawks added a run in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off the run-rule win.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWW 10
UWW scored single runs in the first and the third to go ahead 2-0.  In the fourth, Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) recorded UWSP's first hit of the game with a two-out single.
 
Four hits, including a three-run home run, allowed the Warhawks to score four times for a 6-0 lead in the fourth.
 
With two away in the seventh, Simmons drew a walk.  Zamudio and Carlson singled back-to-back to push home the Pointers' lone run of the game.
 
UWW added a single tally in the sixth and three more in the eighth to complete the scoring.
 
The Pointers wrap up the regular season on Monday (May 7) at University Field against UW-Oshkosh.  The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
