Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Pointers Rally Past Falcons into NCHA Title Game

After going over 100 minutes with scoring a goal and finding itself trailing in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association semifinals, the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team didn't panic.

The Pointers got goals from Jackie Foley (Vadnais Heights, MN/White Bear Lake) and Kim Lunneborg (Richfield, MN/Richfield) to overcome a one-goal deficit and beat UW-River Falls 2-1 on Saturday in Superior to reach the NCHA playoff title game for the third straight year. UW-Stevens Point will take on top-seeded UW-Superior, which beat UW-Eau Claire 4-0, in the title game at 4 p.m. in Superior.

The Pointers avenged a 5-1 loss to UW-River Falls in last year's championship game and beat the Falcons in the 2001 title game.

UW-Stevens Point is now 16-6-4 overall and finished the season 4-0-1 against UW-River Falls as the two rivals have now played 13 of their last 15 meetings decided by two goals or less.

UW-River Falls scored the game's first goal at the 7:39 mark of the second period as defenseman Lindsy Carlson scored an unassisted goal. However, Foley, also a defenseman, added an unassisted goal for the Pointers at the 13:47 mark of the period to even the game. The Pointers were shutout in their last game by UW-Superior and hadn't scored since early in the third period of the previous game before Foley's goal.

UW-Stevens Point got the game-winning goal from Lunneborg at the 2:06 mark of the third period with assists from Jana Jurkovich (Edina, MN/Edina) and Liz Goergen (Apple Valley, MN/East View).

Pointers' goalie Amy Statz (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Wisconsin Rapids) stopped all 10 of the Falcons' third period shots and finished with 21 saves for the game. UW-Stevens Point held a 40-22 advantage in shots for the game.

Sunday's game will give the Pointers or Yellowjackets the inside track to the one at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament awarded to a team from the NCHA.
