PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The No. 17 UW- Stevens Point men's basketball team (21-9) saw its postseason run end at the hands of No. 1 Whitman College (29-1) on Friday night in Platteville by a 65-55 final.
Junior
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) led the Pointers with 14 points with four three-pointers. He had a team-high three steals, added three assists and snagged four rebounds.
Fellow junior
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) added 12 points for UWSP. He had five boards and an assist. Senior
MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) capped his UWSP career with nine points, two steals, two rebounds and an assist.
The Pointers were pressed early and often by Whitman and turned the ball over 22 times in the defeat. UWSP also went just 6-for-15 from the free throw line.
Fredrickson scored five early points for UWSP and a 7-5 lead. The Blues responded with a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes until
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) ended the run with a jumper. That jumper sparked a 7-0 run by the Pointers that included a runner by
MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and another three-pointer by Fredrickson to close within 19-16.
Whitman ended the first half on an 11-3 run and caused 15 UWSP turnovers in the first half to push the lead to 30-19 at the half.
Delmore scored all nine of his points in succession over the first four-plus minutes of the second half, but UWSP couldn't get the deficit down to single digits. Whitman held the Pointers scoreless over the next four minutes and extended the lead to 21.
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) completed an and-1 with just under 11 minutes to go as UWSP tried to rally. Nelson scored six-straight for the Pointers but the deficit remained at 18 with 6:33 to go.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) hit a corner three, was fouled and made the free throw for the four-point play to cut it to 14. Fredrickson hit a pair of three in the final 1:27 to cut the final deficit to 10.
UWSP concludes its run in the Sweet 16 in its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2015 National Championship run. Senior
