LAKE PLACID, N.Y.— The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team out-shot Salve Regina, 53-21, but were unable to find the back of the net, falling by a 3-0 score to Salve Regina in the National Semifinal on Friday afternoon at Herb Brooks Arena.
With 1:25 remaining in the first period, Erik Udahl scored to give Salve Regina (22-5-2) a 1-0 lead over UWSP (21-6-3). The Pointers out-shot the Seahawks 23-4 in the first period, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Midway through the second period freshman forward Zach Zech (South Lyon, MI/) rang the post for the Pointers, but could not break through Salve Regina's All-American goaltender Blake Wojtala.
At the 13:50 mark of the second period, Udahl scored a power-play goal to put the Seahawks up 2-0 entering the third period.
Late in the third period, Danny Philbrick scored an empty net goal to put Salve Regina up by three.
The Pointers added another 19 shots in the third period, but were unable to get UWSP on the scoreboard. UWSP out-shot Salve Regina 55-21. Wojtala set a new NCAA Tournament record for most saves in a single game ending in regulation.
Senior goaltender Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI/) tallied 17 saves for the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point finishes the season with a 21-6-3 record, and the fifth-consecutive 20 win season for UWSP. The senior class of P.J. Bridges (Waterford, MI/), Nathan Harris (Fowlerville, MI/), Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI/) and Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa/) wraps up careers that featured four NCAA Tournament berths, three trips to the Frozen Four and a National Championship in 2016.
