GREENVILLE, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (5-3) split a pair of one-run games with Buena Vista (5-1) on Saturday at the Greenville Tournament. In the opener, UWSP squandered a three-run lead and fell 5-4. The Pointers won game two behind a four-run frame, 4-3.
Freshman
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) went 5-for-5 on the day and scored a run in each game.
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) had four hits on the day with two RBI and a run scored.
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) went 2-for-3 in game two with a run scored and drove in another.
Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) had a pair of hits in the first game, drove in a run and scored twice.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, BVU 5
Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) singled to begin the Pointers' third inning and move to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Tatum Tackmier (Ashwaubenon, WIs./Ashwaubenon). Two batters later, Mix drove her in with a single to center. Johnson followed with a run-scoring double and a 2-0 UWSP lead.
The Beavers got a run back in the bottom of the inning with a walk and a pair of hits.
Mix and Johnson had back-to-back doubles with one down in the fifth to give the Pointers a 3-1 lead. UWSP added an unearned run in the sixth.
The lead remained until the bottom of the seventh. A one-out double sparked a four-run rally and a walk-off win for BVU.
Freshman
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) struck out five in a complete game effort.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, BVU 3
The Beavers turned a leadoff walk in the second into a two-run frame and a 2-0 lead.
Johnson sparked the Pointers' rally in the fifth with a leadoff double. Cooper followed with an RBI single. Luedtke reached on an infield hit and
Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, Wis./Rapid River) singled to load the bases. With two down, Tackmier doubled to clear the bases and give UWSP a 4-2 lead.
BVU got a run back in the seventh, but UWSP held on to hand the Beavers their first loss of the season.
The Pointers return to action on Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. doubleheader against No. 9 Luther.
