MARQUETTE, Mich. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (3-1) closed out a successful opening weekend with a split on day two of the Finlandia Dome Classic on Sunday. UWSP began the day with a 4-3 win over Edgewood, but fell in the final game of the weekend, 7-2, to Concordia (Wis.).
Paige Allen (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) recorded four hits on the day, scored twice and drove in a run. She had two hits, including a double, in each game.
Tatum Tackmier (Ashwaubenon, WIs./Ashwaubenon) went 2-for-2 with a run scored against Edgewood.
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) belted a pair of doubles against CUW and scored a run.
In the circle,
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) racked up 10 more strikeouts and earned her second win of the season.
Anna Palicka (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) earned a save and struck out five over 5.1 innings of work.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, Edgewood 3
Allen doubled to lead off the first inning and scored after an Edgewood error for a 1-0 UWSP lead.
Payton Mix (New London, Wis./New London) reached on another EC miscue to begin the second. With two down, Tackmier reached on an infield single and stole second to put two in scoring position. The first run of the inning crossed the plate on a passed ball. Allen followed with a run-scoring single for a 3-0 advantage for the Pointers.
In the fourth,
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) reached on an error and advanced to third on consecutive stolen bases. Mix reached on a fielder's choice as Luedtke was cut down at the plate. Pinch runner
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) stole second and came around to score on a Cohen single.
Edgewood scored twice on three hits in the sixth and added another in the seventh before Palicka ended to Eagles' threat with a game-ending strikeout for her first career save.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, CUW 7
CUW opened the scoring in the second inning turning a leadoff single in a run. The Falcons added two more runs in the sixth for a 3-0 lead.
The Pointers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Cooper and Cohen.
CUW scored four times in the top of the seventh on three hits and three UWSP errors. In the bottom of the inning, Allen doubled with two away and scored on a
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, Wis./Kaukauna) single. A groundout ended the game.
The Pointers return to action on March 6 with a doubleheader against Bethel in St. Paul, Minn.
