Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK/) tallied a pair of goals to lead the third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over UW-River Falls on Saturday night at K.B. Willett Arena. With the win, the Pointers have advanced to the WIAC Commissioner's Cup Championship game on March 3.
At 4:54 of the first period, Karty netted his first goal of the game to give the Pointers (20-4-3) a 1-0 lead over UW-River Falls (8-17-4).Â
Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa/) and
Colin Raver (Bartlett, IL/) assisting on the first of Karty's two goals, with the trio combined for seven of the Pointers' nine points on the evening.
In the second period, Karty struck again to double the UWSP lead off assists by Nong-Lambert and Raver.
Peter Kavaros scored at 6:02 of the third period cut the UWSP lead to 2-1. Just three minutes, later
Zach Zech (South Lyon, MI/) netted a power-play goal to put the Pointers back up by two.
With 17 seconds remaining in regulation, Thomas Clayton scored for the Falcons while skating with an extra attacker.
Freshman goaltender
Connor Ryckman (Minesing, ON/) made 21 saves in goal for the Pointers.
The win marks the fifth-consecutive 20-win season for UWSP.
UWSP hosts UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, March 3 in the WIAC Tournament Championship.
