STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) piled up a career-high 27 points as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (14-11, 8-6) closed out the regular season with an 85-76 win over visiting UW-Eau Claire (17-8, 9-5) on Saturday. The win was the fifth straight for UWSP.
Fellow seniors
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) also had big games. Barrett scored 13 points and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) picked up 16 rebounds.
Sophomore
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) and freshman
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) also chipped in double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) began the game with back-to-back three-pointers in the opening minutes of play for a 6-2 lead. Geier hit a three and Cerrato buried a pair of long-range shots as UWSP took a 27-14 lead after one.
Roland and Geier scored five-straight points as the lead grew back to 13 at 33-20. Later in the quarter, Geier had five-consecutive points for UWSP and Roland drain a three at the buzzer to keep UWSP in front 43-36 at the half.
Barrett got the second-half scoring underway for the Pointers and Cerrato followed with a three to up the lead to 10 at 48-38. Over the next five minutes, UWEC scored 13-straight until
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) scored to end the drought.
Trailing by one to open the fourth, Barrett and Geier scored the first seven points of the quarter as UWSP retook the lead. Then with 2:41 remaining, Cerrato drilled a pivotal three as the Pointers maintained a two-possession lead and made 11-of-12 free throws to ice the win.
The Pointers will be the five-seed in next week's WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) and play at four-seed, yet to be determined, on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
