Delmore Shines on Senior Night as Pointers Take Down Titans

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) tied a career-high with 23 points as the No. 19 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (17-7, 11-2) secured a spot in the WIAC Tournament semifinals with a 77-70 win over No. 14 UW-Oshkosh (18-6, 8-5) on Wednesday.  The win extended UWSP's home winning streak to 10 and marks the fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.

Delmore led all players in scoring and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.  He was also 3-of-5 from three-point range with four rebounds and an assist.

Juniors Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor), Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) and Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) also poured in double figures.  O'Heron had 16 with five boards and three assists.  Nelson scored 11 with three rebounds and three assists.  Dodge hit a pair of threes for 10 points and also snagged three boards.

O'Heron scored four-straight as UWSP used a 6-0 run to jump ahead 8-4, a lead the Pointers would not relinquish.  O'Heron and Delmore scored on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead to five.  Dodge hit his first three of the game to cap a 7-0 spurt and Delmore followed with a three to push the advantage to 10 at 25-15.

Later in the half, Nelson scored five-straight points for UWSP. With just under five minutes to go in the half, Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) hit a three and Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) extended the lead to 13 minutes later.  Delmore hit a pair of free throws just before half to end a 6-0 run by the Titans as UWSP led 37-30 at the break.

After UWO scored in the opening seconds, the Pointers scored the next six points to run the lead to 14.  Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Dodge each hit a three as the lead remained in double digits through the halfway point of the second half.

O'Heron interrupted a UWO 8-2 run with a bucket, but the Titans closed to within seven with 5:45 to go.  As the clock ticked under three minutes, Delmore hit another three to put the lead back to eight.   The Titans again closed to within five with 1:31 to go, but 11 of 12 free throws by UWSP down the stretch kept the UWO comeback at bay.

The Pointers travel to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. game to close out the regular season. A win or a UW-Platteville loss gives UWSP at least a share of the regular season title.  Tonight's win locked up a bye into next week's WIAC Tournament semifinals.  The Pointers will await their opponent for Friday's 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Quandt.
