LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (4-7) fell to No. 7 Amherst (8-1) in the non-conference finale, 59-41, at the D3Hoops Classic.
Sophomore
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) scored 11 of her team-high 13 points in the second half as the Pointers tied the Mammoths in the second half.
Junior
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) was also in double figures with 10 points, seven of which she scored in the first half. Freshman
Amber Baehman (Plainfield, Wis. /Tri-County) led UWSP with nine boards.
Baehman scored UWSP's first three points in the game.
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) hit a bucket and Cerrato nailed a three as the Pointers jumped ahead 8-2 early. Amherst clamped down on defense allowing just a free throw the remainder of the period for a 12-9 lead over the Pointers.
The Mammoths continued to stifle the Pointers early in the second quarter until Cerrato hit a jumper to end a 20-1 Amherst run. Amherst scored nine-straight before Cerrato scored again with just over two minutes before halftime. Collins scored in the closing seconds, but UWSP trailed 33-15 at the half.
Collins scored UWSP first six points of the third quarter, but the Mammoths were up 42-21. Cerrato drilled a three and Baehman hit two free throws to complete the scoring for the Pointers in the third.
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) hit from behind the arc to begin the fourth quarter. Back-to-back buckets by Geier and a layup by Collins cut the deficit to 15, but UWSP would get no closer in the defeat.
The Pointers travel to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 2) to open conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
