Pointers Ride Fast Start Past Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The No. 12 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (7-2) jumped out to a 12-0 lead and rolled to a 76-57 win over host Call Lutheran (2-6) at the Cal Lutheran Holiday Classic on Friday.

Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) led all scorers with 25 points in the win.  He made six three-pointers and shot 8-for-15 overall from the field.

Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) added 15 points and led the Pointers with eight rebounds.  Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) were also in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Bublitz and O'Heron combined to give UWSP a 6-0 lead to begin the game.  Fredrickson and Dodge hit back-to-back threes to push the lead to 12-0.  O'Heron sandwiched consecutive Dodge triples with buckets as the lead ballooned to 24-5 less than eight minutes in.

Chaz Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) made a layup with 6:44 left in the first half as UWSP went ahead 32-11.  With three and a half to go in the half, Bublitz buried a three to extend the lead to 41-19.  Bublitz scored again and the lead stood at 43-25 at the half.

Dodge hit two three-pointers and completed an and-one early in the second half as UWSP built the advantage to 27 at 56-29.  Fredrickson completed an and-one of his own and Dodge nailed his sixth three as the lead reached 30 with 10:09 to go in the game.  Although UWSP scored just 10 points the remainder of the game, the outcome was already determined.

The Pointers will face Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday (Dec. 29) at 8:00 p.m. CT to close out non-conference play.  The Titans scored 103 points on Friday in a two-point loss to No. 4 Whitman.
